How to start forex trading with an offshore broker in 6 steps: pick a broker, open an account, verify ID, deposit, set up MT4/MT5 and place a small first trade.

You want to open an offshore forex account but do not know where to begin. This guide covers the path from account opening to your first trade in 6 steps.

The steps compare the official procedures of the 10 brokers listed on this site (data verified by this site) and keep only the flow they share. By the end, you will know what to do today.

Conclusion: how to open an offshore forex account in 6 steps

The details differ by broker, but the skeleton is the same across the 10 listed brokers. You register an email address, fill in your profile, verify your identity, create an account and deposit.

The order can vary. Some brokers ask you to choose an account type before identity verification, and others ask afterwards.

The 6 steps are listed below. Each step is explained in the sections that follow.

  • Step 1: Choose a broker. Compare maximum leverage, minimum deposit, negative balance protection (zero cut) and platforms across several brokers.
  • Step 2: Fill in the account opening form. Register your email address, then enter your name, date of birth and address exactly as written on your ID.
  • Step 3: Complete identity verification. Submit your ID document and proof of address as images. You may not be able to deposit until approval.
  • Step 4: Deposit. Check the method and minimum amount shown, and deposit in your own name. The amount you request must match the amount you send.
  • Step 5: Set up your trading tool. Install MT4 or MT5 and log in with the account details you were issued.
  • Step 6: Place a first trade with a small amount. Go through one full cycle from order to close.
  • Registered details, document spelling and the name of the deposit source should all be your own and should match.
  • For your first trade, use an amount you can afford to lose and a small trade size.

What you need to open an offshore forex account

Before applying, gather the 4 items below. Documents are submitted as images, so keep them ready to photograph with your smartphone.

Which documents and deposit methods are accepted differs by broker. Follow the application screen and the client area (account management screen).

Note: images must show all four corners and be readable. Each broker asks you to match your registered details to your documents and to submit images where the corners and the written content can be read. Blurry or cropped images are a common reason for resubmission.

  • ID document: a valid document specified on the application screen. Use one that has not expired.
  • Proof of address: a document that confirms your name and current address. Make sure it matches the address you register.
  • Email address: used to register and to receive verification codes. Choose an address you check regularly.
  • Deposit method: domestic bank transfer, card, online wallet and others. Choose one you can use in your own name.
  • These items are the common points across official information on each broker (data verified by this site; check dates are on each broker page).

Step 1: What to look at when choosing an offshore broker

Start with the items you can compare in numbers. The list below shows published values for 3 of the listed brokers as an example (data verified by this site; check dates are on each broker page). An asterisk means conditions apply.

The margin call level (the warning level before forced closing) at HFM is 50% (20% for KATANA). Stop out is the forced closing of positions when the margin level falls. It corresponds to the loss cut at domestic (Japan-registered) forex brokers. These figures are published by each broker and can change by account type and over time.

Negative balance protection (zero cut) means you are not billed for the part of a loss that exceeds your account balance after a sudden market move. The terms and exceptions in each broker's rules take priority.

A stop-out level is the point at which positions are closed by force when your margin runs short. The higher the level, the earlier positions are closed.

If you want to try with little money, check whether a low-minimum-deposit account exists. If you use EAs (automated trading programs) or several trading tools, check the supported platforms.

For a deeper look at comparison criteria, see the broker comparison basics guide on this site. To understand account types, see the column on offshore forex account types on this site.

  • Maximum leverage: XS up to 1:2000*; HFM up to 1:2000* (varies by account); Monaxa up to 1:2000*
  • Minimum deposit: XS has accounts with no minimum; HFM has accounts from $0; Monaxa from $15 (Standard and Cent)
  • Negative balance protection (zero cut): XS yes*; HFM yes*; Monaxa yes*
  • Stop-out level: XS check the account and applicable conditions; HFM 20% (KATANA 0%)*; Monaxa loss cut 50% and stop out 20%
  • Platforms: XS MT4 and MT5; HFM MT4, MT5, WebTrader and the HFM app; Monaxa MT4 and MT5

Steps 2 to 4: the application form, ID verification and your deposit

Step 2 and 3: The form starts with email verification. Next you enter your name, date of birth and address, using the same spelling as your ID document. A mismatch can stall approval.

After submission, you wait for the broker's review. The review time has no uniform statement on the official sites checked, so follow the guidance on the application screen.

Note: you may not be able to change your account type easily later. Spreads, fees and supported platforms change by account type. For example, the XS Cent account supports MT5 only. Check the differences before you choose.

Step 4: Deposit methods listed include domestic bank transfer, card, online wallet and cryptocurrency. Which methods you can use differs by broker and country of residence.

The minimum amount and fees on the deposit screen of the client area are the most current information, so follow what the screen shows.

Withdrawals may have to go back to the same method you deposited with. When choosing a deposit method, also consider how easy withdrawal will be. For a comparison, see the column on offshore forex deposit methods on this site.

  • Enter your email address and verify it with the confirmation code you receive
  • Enter your country of residence, name, date of birth and address in the same spelling as your documents
  • Submit images of your ID document and proof of address
  • Choose the account type, platform and account currency
  • Match the name of the deposit source to your registered name
  • Check the method, minimum amount and currency on the deposit screen before you apply
  • Match the amount you request to the amount you actually send
  • If you plan to use a bonus, check the eligible accounts before depositing

Steps 5 and 6: set up MT4/MT5 and place a small first trade

Step 5: MT4 and MT5 are trading tools used by many offshore forex brokers. Both PC and smartphone versions are available.

After your account is opened, your account number and server name are sent by email or shown in the client area. You log in with this information. Before trading, look at the order screen and the close screen. For differences between the tools, see the MT4 and MT5 basics guide, and for how leverage and stop out work, see the leverage and loss cut guide.

Step 6: Key point: set your amount by what you can afford to lose. The purpose of a first trade is to check how things work, not to make a profit. Keep your deposit within an amount that would not affect your daily life if lost. This article does not give a specific amount.

On accounts with high leverage, even a small price move can reduce your margin sharply. For your first trade, keep the trade size small enough to leave room. To sort out the types of risk before trading, see the forex risk guide on this site.

  • Use the same tool (MT4 or MT5) that you chose when opening the account
  • Log in with three items: account number, password and server name
  • Depending on the account type, only one of the two platforms may be supported
  • Check each broker's official page to see whether a demo account is offered
  • First trade, step 1: pick one currency pair. Focus on a single symbol first, and check its specifications (spread, fees, required margin) in the symbol specifications of your trading tool.
  • First trade, step 2: place an order near the minimum size. Try a small trade size (lots). The higher the leverage, the more your losses can move.
  • First trade, step 3: decide your stop loss and close the trade. Practise placing a stop order (an order that closes automatically at a set price) when you open the position. Going through one full cycle to the close builds the routine.

Four mistakes that are common when opening an offshore forex account

These 4 points cause the most stumbles. All of them can be avoided if you know them in advance. The list below is based on common cautions in official information on each broker (data verified by this site).

Note: check the withdrawal conditions before you accept a bonus. A bonus is often granted as credit (trading balance added to your account), and in that form it cannot be withdrawn as is. Trading volume conditions and expiry conditions differ by promotion. For details, see the column on bonus withdrawal rules on this site.

  • Name mismatch: identity verification is not approved, or a deposit is not credited. Prevent it by matching the registered name, documents and deposit source to your own name.
  • Incomplete proof of address: you have to resubmit. Prevent it by checking on the application screen whether the document is valid.
  • Bonus withdrawal conditions: the credit cannot be withdrawn or is cancelled. Prevent it by checking the eligible accounts and conditions in the rules before depositing.
  • Withdrawing by a different method from your deposit: the withdrawal methods may be limited. Prevent it by checking the withdrawal principle before depositing.

Tax and legal status to understand before you start

Profits from offshore forex are generally treated as miscellaneous income under aggregate (progressive) taxation in Japan. For a final decision, check with the tax office (NTA, Japan's National Tax Agency) or a tax accountant.

Tax rates and calculation details are covered in the tax column on this site. It is worth reading once before you open an account.

Note: you are responsible for checking a broker's registration status. The legal position of offshore brokers and how warnings from the FSA (Japan's Financial Services Agency) work are explained in a dedicated column on this site. Learn how to check before you start trading. See the columns on offshore forex taxes and on legality and FSA warnings on this site.
